GCC Participates in National Safety Stand-Down 2015

Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 291 of the 828 construction fatalities recorded in 2013. Those deaths were preventable.

Fall prevention safety standards were among the top 10 most frequently cited OSHA standards during the fiscal year 2014. GCC participated in the Stand-Down last year (2014), which was a tremendous success, reaching more than 1 million workers. During the period of May 4 – 15, 2015, construction companies across our nation once again observed and participated in National Safety StandDown.

The national goal for 2015 is for more than 20,000 Stand-Downs involving more than 3 Gilchrist Construction Company, 5709 New York Avenue, Alexandria, Louisiana 71302 Submitted by Valerie Aymond, CRO, GCC May 15, 2015 Page 2 million workers. If we meet this goal, we will have touched almost 4 out of 10 construction workers in the industry.

Gilchrist Construction Company capitalized on this occasion as an opportunity to raise awareness within our organization and also to continue to educate our workforce regarding safety best practices. The goals for our 2015 National Stand-Down Campaign focused on four specific areas:
  • Daily safety meetings using recommended toolbox talks
  • Daily risk observations and cross-project risk observations
  • Educating our future workforce on the importance of safety in construction
  • Celebrating the positives with our employees

Educating our Future Workforce
On Friday, May 8th, 32 Construction Technology Course (CTC) students from Alexandria Senior High School participated in a rigging demonstration, conducted at Project 1203 Hynson Bayou. Kevin Grage, GCC Safety Director, and Brian Hattaway, GCC Production Field Manager, facilitated a session to demonstrate the importance of safety in our daily work. We received tremendous feedback from the students as well as the instructor.

Celebrating the Positives through Workforce Appreciation Throughout our two-week safety campaign, we took some time to celebrate the positives and thank our crews and teams for the work that they do. We served breakfast and/or lunch at our project sites.

Thanks to all of our GCC teams for your participation, and to our partners at Travelers for their support.
